Speedies

Here's a few speedpaintings. From the left, Steven Spielberg, John Singer Sargent, and Nathan Lane. Just trying to keep these quick and spontaneous, and hopefully keep a likeness. This is one of my favourite ways to wind down at the end of the day.

DrawerGeeks: Indiana Jones

Well, I'm back from San Diego. Had an awesome and very educational time there. I got to meet some painters whom I have utmost respect for, and not only chat with them, but see lots of originals too! I painted every day, but I was too busy absorbing information that I don't really have any paintings that I'm overly satisfied with. The whole week was like a crash course. I promise I'll get some plein air paintings up on here soon though. For now, here's my sketch for tomorrow's DrawerGeeks.

Off To San Diego!

The time has finally come! Tomorrow I'm hopping on a plane to San Diego! It's primarily a painting trip, so hopefully I'll come back in a week with new stuff to show. I'll mainly be doing plein air stuff.
See you all when I get back!

(Above is a portrait from this week, about 2 hours, oil on board, 8x10")

Life/Memory Study

I was struck by the colour of this scene when I saw it, but I didn't have any paint with me, so I quickly sketched it out in pen while taking mental notes about colour so I could paint the scene at home from memory. I find doing that quickly reveals gaps in my knowledge.
I've been trying to fill a few of those gaps with "Carlson's Guide To Lanscape Painting". Solid information in there. Most helpful to me is his theory of the 4 value planes. Lightest usually being the sky, second being the ground plane, third being slanted planes, and fourth being upright planes.
